Let us proudly present our new “PANTON ROOM”

April 6th, 2010
Panton is now a part of our passion! – specifically in room 222. Among Hotel Alexandra’s many Danish retro design rooms are also now a Panton room. Room 222 is now equipped with some of his best design icons, created through his long life, with shape and colour.

Verner Panton was an inspirational and colourful personality. A unique person with a special sense of colours, shapes, light function and room.
He established his own design office in 1955 and is credited with the design of the very first single-form injection-moulded plastic chair – the Stacking chair designed in 1960. The "S" chair was the first, one-piece, mass produced, plastic chair. Verner Panton designed a similar, moulded, laminated wood chair with an unbroken S-curve in 1960. The zigzag form inspired several of Panton’s designs. He also initially worked in Arne Jacobsen’s architectural practice.

After years of searching for a suitable manufacturer for the stacking "S" chair, Vitra, which was manufacturing under license for Herman Miller, developed a prototype made from fibreglass-reinforced polyester, but a desire to make the chair stackable delayed production because the thickness of the material had to be reduced without sacrificing stability.

In 1968, an "S" chair of high resilience polyurethane foam was made jointly by Vitra and Bayer Leverkusen and included in the Herman Miller Collection.

In 1970, Vitra replaced the costly production technology with thermo set injection moulding that used a dyed granulate Luran-s made by BASF. The edge profiles had to be strengthened by reinforcing ribs under the seat. The material could not stand up to dynamic stress, and Vitra discontinued production in 1979.
Like Arne Jacobsen, for whom Verner Panton worked before establishing his own practice in Switzerland, Verner Panton was one of a few Scandinavian designers that broke with the tradition of producing hand-crafted, wood furniture. Panton made a conscious effort to remove himself from the preconceived notions of how a chair should be designed. When conceptualizing a new design, Panton concerned himself with the potential of new materials and how they could be made into new forms.

He was fascinated by the possibilities made available by new plastics that did not limit the designer and allowed for inexpensive products. Panton designed the "Cone" chair in 1958, "Pantonova" seating in 1966, and the "Visiona" exhibits for Basche in 1968 and 1970. He created interior environments with furniture forms and luminous colour.

Trendspotter Field Report: Copenhagen, Part 1

Written on December 21, 2009 at 3:57 pm, by Trendspotter (Jessica Thomas)

I just got back from Copenhagen, and thought I should share all the inspirational things I spotted while I was there. Thanks to the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference, all eyes were on this great design center.

This was my first trip, and I had the benefit of traveling with two experienced Copenhagen visitors, David Anger, professional Minneapolis stylist and someone who could spot a chic home or fashion boutique a mile away, and his partner, Jim Broberg, our appointed and trusted foodie, who scouted out all the great restaurants, tea houses and confectionary cafes. Here are Jim (left) and David (right) at La Glace pastry shop.

Of course in Denmark, Danish modern design is everywhere. Our hotel, Hotel Alexandra, is decorated from lobby to rooms with famous Danish architects furniture and period art with iconic names such as Aarne Jacobsen, Kaare Klint, and Finn Juhl to name a few. I stayed in the Finn Juhl room, which was beautifully outfitted and even had a Royal Copenhagen bowl of fruit as a welcome. Very inspirational décor.

It made me appreciate royal blue in a whole new way.

60 Earth hour Copenhagen – tomorrow at 19:00hrs

December 15th, 2009

60 EARTH HOUR – COPENHAGEN
When world leaders arrive at the crucial climate talks in Copenhagen, the city will turn off the lights an hour on behalf of the entire world. The message will not be mistaking it: the leaders must reach a climate agreement in Copenhagen, which can slow the catastrophic climate change, the world faces.

Earth Hour Copenhagen – Copenhagen ‘chances
It is not for fun, when the WWF says that Copenhagen is to decide future of the planet. COP15 is a historic event, and it is now, we have the opportunity to get global climate on track. Climate change can not be removed by a single technological fix, it requires an exceptionally large and rapid response and responsible and farsighted politicians who dare to make decisions that reach far into the future. Earth Hour Copenhagen is the chance to push in the right direction.

On 16 December at 19:00hrs –  we turn off lights in an hour, throughout the lobby and reception area.
We recommend all our guests, to do the same!

Turn off the lights in your room- VOTE EARTH!

How hard can it be to get out of the financial crisis?

December 9th, 2009

Mr. Lomborg arrives at Hotel Alexandra
He leaves a 1000 DKK. in the reception, and goes upstairs to have a look at a room.
The hotel director then afterwards takes the 1000 DKK. and goes to the butcher and pays his debt.
The butcher takes the money to the farmer, and pays his debt there.
The farmer thanks him, and takes the money to the gas station, where he pays for fuel he’s gotten on credit.
The owner of the gas station takes the 1000 DKK to the local smith and pays his debt.
The smith goes to the hotel, and pays for his Christmas party with the 1000 DKK.
The hotel director puts the 1000 DKK back on the desk.

Mr. Lomborg then comes back to the reception.
He wasn’t happy with the hotel when he realised it was an environmentally certified hotel so he took back his 1000 DKK and left.

No one has therefore made any money, but everyone is free of their debt, and looks at the future optimistically.

How hard can it be to get out of the financial crisis?

Restaurant Saison – Pamper yourself, even on a diet!

September 24th, 2009

The Staff at Hotel Alexandra often visits cafés, bars and restaurants – and afterward we write our personal reviews, that are most valued to our guests – when they have to decide where to have lunch, dinner or just a cup of coffee. Unfortunately we sometimes tend to forget the lovely places outside of the city centre! This is so true, when it comes to Restaurant Saison in Hellerup!
Hellerup is so to speak the ”Beverly Hills area” of Denmark, even a TV-series ”2900 Happiness” has been invented – 2900 is the postal code for Hellerup. However I do not believe the Danish version, ever will be a world-wide success as the world-wide famous Beverly Hills 90210.
At”Strandvejen” (Beach Boulevard) Restaurant Saison is located in no. 203, in the same building as the 4-star Hellerup Park hotel. The restaurant is decorated very neat with parquet floors, white tablecloths, and a mixture of herbs is used as beautiful table decoration. Tables are very well separated from each other, so you can have dinner with some privacy!
Erwin Lauterbach the owner and main chef of Restaurant Saison, has been one of the best chefs in Denmark for over 25 years. He is especially known for an honest, sensual kitchen, where vegetables often play the main role. In 1989 he published a cook book in collaboration with the Health Protection Agency called”real food”. All dishes had a fat content of less than 35. Many of the best chef’s in Denmark has been apprenticed by Mr. Lauterbach.
When I visited, we had a 4-course menu with wine menu, based on seasonal ingredients. As main course, which was my personal favourite, we had a variation of fallow deer and onions, served with a pumpkin pure and grilled Hokkaido pumpkin on the top. With Erwin Lauterbachs motto in mind:”food should taste of it, it is made of” we were not at all disappointed by the wonderful autumn menu that was served for us. At Saison it is possible to get a menu entirely based on vegetables. Fish and shellfish are also presented very well. Service is excellent! You can really feel the waiters and sommeliers are dedicated to their job, the food and the wine they serve.
Low fat cooking, excellent service, raw materials which are allowed to taste of what they are meant to, is the reason why I really want to go here again, and recommend for everyone to do the same!
Price level: (mid-range) Very reasonable, and definitely value for the money!
How to get there from Hotel Alexandra: (travel time approx 30 min.) You can either take bus nr 14 from City Hall Square, or the S-train, line E.
Other plusses: In summer you might combine a very delicious lunch, and at the same time visit the beach in hellerup (very near to Saison)
