Christmas in Copenhagen

This sunday is the first sunday of Advent, and our small boutique hotel will again be decored in Christmas clothing! More staff members has already jumped the “christmas spirit gun” and enjoyed the spirit in Tivoli gardens with the traditionally danish “gløgg and æbleskiver”. Tivoli is definetly worth a visit – but many other places in Copenhagen deserves a visit as well! Here are a few suggestions for markets, “gløgg”, and shopping!

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

Christmas at Gråbrødre torv

At Gråbrødre Torv from now until Christmas you will find shops with ecological goods such as: Cakes, creams and Danish craft .The Christmas tree at the square is lighted with lights from the English light designer, Chris Thornton. In the children’s tent the youngster can enjoy making Christmas art and have fun in chocolate work shop. If you have a mobile phone you can participate in the big Christmas treasure hunt.

Christmas in Nyhavn

In Nyhavn are there decorated stalls, music and fun for the whole family when one of the most Christmassy markets roll over old Nyhavn, where spruce garlands and Christmas lights spreads the Christmas spirit along the famous pier. Santa Claus is there sharing sweets out to the smallest and sweetest.

Royal Copenhagen’s Christmas tables

Visit the Christmas tables exhibition at Royal Copenhagen, at Amager Torv. The tradition began in 1963 and is still very popular. This year the extravagant Christmas tables are set by well known Danish families. 17 Nov. – 24 Dec.

Christmas Market at Christiania

If you do not travel get fingers into the fine, exotic gifts to affordable prices then do not go to the Christmas market at Christianias. The large and beautiful Grey Hall turnes into a magical bazaar full of imaginative stalls where you can buy gifts, which are only one of a kind. 8. – 20. December

Christmas in Tivoli

Tivoli is introducing a Russian theme this year. Tivoli has built a Russian city, complete with a landscape, railway and the St. Basil’s Cathedral. 11. Nov – 23. Dec and 26. dec – 30. Dec.

Illum

Illums is situated In the middle of the pedestrian street. Illums shopping centre has a large verity of fine Danish design – from cups and pots to furniture.

Magasin du Nord

Magasin du Nord has since 1894 been located at Kgs. Nytorv and is the oldest shopping centre in town.

HOT CHOCOLATE, CAKE & GLÖGG

Hviids Vinstue

Every day, in Christmas Hviids Vinstue serve the best Glögg in town. Hviid vinstue is an old cosy wine bar where the serve more than 50.000 glass of the famous Glögg every year.

Peter Beier Chokolade

A lovely chocolate shop located next to La Glace in Skoubogade.

La Glace

La Glace is the oldest and most traditional patisserie in town where they serves 15 different kinds of layer cake and pastry. Enjoy a cake with a hot chocolate and  wiped cream on top. Located in Skoubogade. Closes pm. 17.30

The Royal Café

Located on Amagertorv inside the courtyard, side by side with the Royal Porcelain factory shop and Georg Jensen jewellery store. Here you can have Danish food in fangled interpretations of the high-ceilinged room or in the courtyard.

The Danish Design Experience!

The Royal Cafe and The Danish Museum of Art and Design

Last Friday, I took the staff on a tour to learn more about the history of Danish Design.

Our first stop, where we should have something to to eat and a drink, was “THE ROYAL CAFÉ” at Amagertorv no. 6, next to “Royal Copenhagen” and “Georg Jensen”. We were all very excited about the decoration, and the atmosphere.It is easy to see that THE ROYAL CAFÉ, is also a big fan of Danish Design, just like us. With their unique cooperation with Royal Copenhagen and Georg Jensen, all tableware and table accesories, was specially selected from one of these companies – But even the paintings on the wall, had the most famous tableware from Royal Copenhagen on it.
